It has been a duration of four months since we commenced utilizing Ruggable's washable rugs, and we have only one grievance: We deeply regret not discovering them earlier. Allow me to provide some context: I am actively involved in the care of my mother, who suffers from Parkinson's disease. Consequently, I frequently alternate between her residence in Wisconsin, where she resides with my sister, her husband, their two energetic children, and a mischievous dog, and my own apartment in New York City. Both of our lives are characterized by a constant state of busyness and fulfillment, which is why we consistently seek out solutions that simplify our daily routines. If a particular item proves to be effective in one household, we typically acquire it for the other residence as well. This pattern is precisely what occurred with our recent acquisition of a rug, and it is the reason why I am eager to provide you with an authentic review of Ruggable's product.

I initially became acquainted with the brand when I assisted in assembling an 8-by-10-foot area rug that my mother had purchased for her living room. The impeccable design and practicality of the rug left a lasting impression on me, prompting me to subsequently acquire a doormat for her, followed by a hallway runner, and eventually an area rug for my own urban apartment. Given that I frequently sublease my apartment whenever I travel, I have witnessed firsthand the negligence and untidiness exhibited by short-term renters. Consequently, it is evident that we possess a wealth of personal experience with the brand and its diverse range of rugs.

How Does Ruggable Work?

Ruggable offers a unique two-layer system for their rugs, consisting of a rug pad and a rug cover. The lightweight and non-slip pad is constructed from a foam-like low-pile material that can be easily cleaned in the washer. Customers have the option to choose between a classic pad, suitable for areas such as doorways, outdoor spaces, and beneath rolling furniture, or a cushioned version, ideal for indoor use. The rug cover, which is placed over the pad, adheres to it securely, resembling a velcro-like attachment. Despite their washable nature, the combination of the pad and cover creates a visually and tactilely appealing low-pile rug that is indistinguishable from traditional rugs.

In terms of customization, Ruggable offers a wide range of styles, sizes, and textures to cater to individual preferences. Prices start at $89, and sizes range from 2 x 3-foot to 9 x 12-foot. Texture options include plush, Chenille, shag, and re-jute. With over 10 curated collections, each comprising hundreds of styles and patterns, and an extensive selection of colors, customers have ample choices to suit their decor needs. While the abundance of options may seem overwhelming, once the rug pad is acquired, it can be paired with any desired Ruggable rug cover, allowing for easy and versatile decor changes.

Upon making a selection, the chosen combination is promptly delivered to the customer's doorstep, accompanied by detailed assembly instructions. It is worth noting that having an extra pair of hands during the assembly process can be beneficial. For instance, when setting up an 8-by-10-foot area rug in the living room, I found it helpful to have my nephew assist me. We began by unrolling the pad and attaching the cover to the four corner tabs, which securely fasten with velcro. The entire setup process took us less than 10 minutes. However, when attempting to set up a 3-by-5-foot hall runner by myself, I encountered some frustration in aligning the corners perfectly. Once again, my nephew's assistance proved invaluable, and we were able to complete the task within a few minutes.

How Do Ruggable’s Rugs Compare To Regular Rugs?

One of the initial concerns I had regarding the utilization of a rug consisting of two distinct layers was the potential separation or bunching up of these layers when subjected to the playful activities of children and pets, or when my mother would navigate her walker or wheelchair over it. However, I am pleased to report that we have not encountered any such issues thus far. Another concern we have previously experienced with rugs is their tendency to slip, which poses a significant risk given my mother's health condition. To proactively address this concern, I procured large non-slip rug mats from a reputable hardware store prior to the arrival of our Ruggable rugs. Surprisingly, it transpired that these mats were unnecessary as the base of the rug itself provided exceptional stability. Consequently, I returned the mats accordingly.

One significant advantage of Ruggable is its ability to be laundered at home in a regular washing machine, unlike most single-layer rugs that necessitate costly trips to the dry cleaners or the purchase of specialized upholstery cleaning equipment. The brand's unique two-layered system allows for convenient cleaning without the need for professional services. Additionally, Ruggable rugs exhibit excellent responsiveness to spot-remover treatments, making them ideal for quick and efficient stain removal. For instance, when my niece had an accident involving bright blue ink, we were able to promptly address the issue with a simple spray and gentle rubbing.

How Do You Care For Ruggable’s Washable Rugs?

One of the key advantages of investing in a Ruggable is the convenience it offers in terms of washing the rugs within the confines of your own home. Given that our doormat and runner are constantly exposed to messy shoes that bring in snow, salt, and mud, we frequently resort to washing them in the washing machine to maintain their cleanliness and tidiness.

Regarding our area rug, we had refrained from washing it for nearly two months due to our diligent efforts in regular vacuuming and spot cleaning. However, upon moving our couch and discovering a noticeable difference in shade between the exposed area and the area underneath, we realized it was time to remove the rug cover and give it a thorough wash. Since my mother's older machine is relatively smaller compared to newer options, fitting an 8 x 10-foot rug was a tight squeeze. We added a mild detergent and ran a cold cycle wash, followed by drying it on a low heat setting in the dryer. It is worth noting that depending on the texture of the rug purchased, the brand recommends specific dryer settings to ensure the longevity of the product.

If you choose the larger size (9 x 12-foot) or reside in an apartment building without access to a washer and dryer, such as myself, it is likely that you will need to transport your rug to the nearest laundromat. However, I have found this to be a more cost-effective option (costing me $8 for washing and drying my area rug) compared to sending it to a professional dry cleaner.

Is Ruggable Worth It?

After careful consideration, I have arrived at the conclusion that Ruggable is indeed a worthwhile investment. The convenience of being able to effortlessly clean the rugs in the event of accidental spills or stains caused by footwear worn indoors is a significant advantage. Additionally, the brand's innovative approach to providing stylish rugs without the added burden of dry cleaning expenses or the need for specialized cleaning equipment is commendable. Overall, Ruggable offers an excellent solution for enhancing the aesthetic appeal of one's living space while minimizing the stress associated with maintaining the cleanliness of traditional rugs.
